The milestone was completed on schedule: the entire roof waterproofing system for Guiyang Airport’s Terminal 3 has now been fully installed!

On March 30, the main roof waterproofing works for Terminal 3 at Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport were successfully completed through the concerted efforts of all project personnel, marking the timely achievement of the waterproofing milestone. Leaders from the Phase III Expansion Command and representatives from various departments, along with leaders from Dadi Steel Structure, jointly attended the waterproofing completion ceremony.

The main roof structure of Terminal 3 is undertaken by The complex comprises the Terminal Concourse and Connecting Corridors in Area A, the Terminal Building in Area B, and the Connecting Corridors in Area C, with a total floor area of 90,000 square meters. It incorporates a roof structural system, a building envelope system, an intelligent skylight system, and a siphonic rainwater drainage system, with a total installed material area of 658,000 square meters and a steel consumption of 288 metric tons. The intelligent skylight system features electrochromic glass covering 6,000 square meters—making it the first application of this high-tech product at a domestic airport. This skylight glass can dynamically adjust shading or daylight transmission based on indoor lighting requirements.
Due to the influence of special geological conditions, the working face of this project has been divided from the original three major blocks into With 22 work fronts, the construction schedule has been adjusted from 320 days to 60 days per front, and the handover date has been extended from April 2020 to February 2021. Due to the placement of tower cranes inside the building, these cranes must be dismantled immediately upon completion of the civil works. Meanwhile, the east and north sides are constrained by apron construction in the airfield area, while the west side is affected by EPC elevated bridge construction, all of which pose challenges to large-scale concurrent operations and accelerated construction efforts.

According to standard construction methods Achieving watertightness within 60 days is an almost impossible task, especially given that this project features a curved roof with an irregular steel structure and a hyperbolic aluminum capping at the eaves. Traditional roofing methods involve piece-by-piece assembly on-site: after the supporting framework is installed, individual aluminum panels are lifted and fixed one by one at height. This approach is not only inefficient and inherently unsafe but also makes it difficult to achieve the required precision for such complex, high-altitude installations. To address these challenges, the project team leveraged BIM technology to innovate the construction methodology: they modeled the primary and secondary purlins as well as the eave capping for each work area, then divided the components into manageable units that could be fully assembled on the ground before being lifted and installed as complete modules. Similarly, the aluminum capping panels were pre-assembled and sealed on the ground, enabling their seamless, single-lift installation as finished units—achieving both precision and efficiency in one go. By completing a significant portion of the work on the ground, the team not only improved productivity but also enhanced construction quality, thereby providing critical technical support to meet the project’s scheduled milestones.
Roofing works since Since construction commenced in March 2020, thanks to the concerted efforts of all parties, we have overcome the impact of the pandemic and surmounted numerous challenges, successfully completing one major project milestone after another. On July 15, 2020, the first water-tightness test for Zone GB2-1-1 was conducted successfully; on November 30, 2020, Zone A of the finger pier achieved successful water-tightness; and on March 30, 2021, the roof of the main terminal building was fully sealed against water, thereby satisfactorily fulfilling the objectives and tasks assigned by the Project Command.
