Space steel tubular truss structures are an important component of large-span spatial structures, characterized by their aesthetically pleasing appearance and excellent ability to meet architectural requirements. They exhibit rational load-bearing behavior and can achieve performance targets related to safety, serviceability, and economy. However, due to their large span, substantial volume, and stringent installation accuracy requirements, they must be erected and joined at elevated heights. Given the high construction costs and extended construction schedules associated with conventional full-coverage scaffolding methods, a track-based sliding hoisting technique has been developed. This method involves the entire supporting formwork frame sliding along platform tracks, while the working platform is alternately advanced, thereby simplifying and enhancing the safety and operability of the construction process.

Hydraulic lifting construction technology is widely used in large-span spatial structures, such as airport terminals, high-speed railway station buildings, and convention and exhibition centers. The roof steel structures of such buildings typically adopt truss configurations; however, due to their large spans, substantial volumes, heavy self-weights, complex on-site conditions, and stringent installation accuracy requirements, these structures must be erected within the building or in the overhead space. Given constraints on tower crane capacity and the inability of large-scale lifting equipment to access the construction site, our company has developed a hydraulic integral lifting construction technique that effectively addresses these challenges.

Fabrication and Construction Techniques for Ultra-Large Box-Type Y-Shaped Steel Columns with Variable Cross-Sections

For the exterior of steel-structure buildings, custom-shaped columns—such as Y-shaped columns—are often employed to achieve an aesthetically pleasing visual effect and to support roof structures and dome-shaped walkways at ground level. These Y-shaped columns are typically fabricated from segmented steel components that are welded on-site to form the final structure, which increases the complexity of welding. Moreover, Y-shaped steel columns are characterized by their substantial weight and challenging center-of-gravity positioning, making them more prone to torsional deformation and swinging during lifting operations and thereby raising the difficulty of hoisting. To address these challenges—namely, the difficulty of internal welding and the stringent requirements for lifting—the fabrication and construction techniques for extra-large box-section, variable-cross-section Y-shaped steel columns provide an effective solution.

The application of this technology effectively mitigates these challenges, significantly enhances the safety of underground works, substantially reduces project costs, shortens construction timelines, and prevents settlement of the surrounding ground. As such, it holds great potential for further development and widespread adoption.
