The steel structure for Phase II, Section A of the Segmented Assembly and Welding Workshop under the Shanghai CSSC Changxing Phase II Project’s Capacity Gap-Filling Initiative has been successfully lifted into place for the first time.
At 10:18 a.m. on March 20, the first steel structure segment for the Phase II Gap-Capacity Completion Project at Shanghai CSSC Changxing Shipbuilding—specifically, the Section Assembly and Welding Workshop (Phase II, Section A)—was successfully lifted into place, officially marking the project’s entry into the main structural construction phase.
The project is located within the shipbuilding base on Changxing Island in Chongming District, Shanghai. It has a gross floor area of 15,120 square meters, comprises one above-ground story, and features a roof height of 37.9 meters. This is a renovation and expansion project that adds one additional bay to the existing factory building, with the new construction extending a total length of 336 meters and spanning 45 meters. The foundation system consists of piles and pile caps, while the superstructure is a steel portal frame, requiring approximately 3,027 metric tons of steel.
Upon completion, the project will further streamline shipbuilding processes, eliminate production bottlenecks, systematically enhance the capacity of the block assembly and welding workshop, facilitate the transformation of the Changxing Island Marine Equipment Base from traditional manufacturing to intelligent manufacturing, and promote the adoption of smart production lines and green shipbuilding technologies.
Construction of Phase II of the Changxing Shipbuilding Base of China Shipbuilding commenced on January 4, 2021. Located along the southern shore of Changxing Island in Shanghai, the project covers a total area of 431.8 hectares and involves a total investment of RMB 18 billion. It has been designated as a major national project by the National Development and Reform Commission and a key municipal project by the Shanghai Municipal Government, serving as a significant embodiment of the country’s strategies to build a strong maritime nation, a science and technology powerhouse, and to advance “Made in China 2025.” The first phase is planned to encompass 460,000 square meters of building space, establishing an annual production capacity for six specialized vessels and positioning the base as a new high-performance platform and a prominent highlight for technological innovation and transformative development in China’s shipbuilding industry during the 14th Five-Year Plan period.
The project team will continue to uphold the spirit of hard work and perseverance, implement scientific project management and meticulous construction, and advance project development to high standards, with high quality and at a high level, thereby helping to build a world-class marine equipment island and contributing to the transformation and upgrading of China’s shipbuilding industry.
