Phase II of the Shanghai CSSC Changxing Shipbuilding Base Successfully Tops Out
At 9:58 a.m. on April 22, the research and office building project for the overall relocation of the headquarters of Phase II at the Shanghai CSSC Changxing Shipbuilding Base was successfully topped out.
The project is located within Phase II of the CSSC Changxing Shipbuilding Base on the southern shore of Changxing Island in Chongming District, Shanghai. The total floor area is 73,378 square meters, with 69,038 square meters above ground and 4,340 square meters underground. It comprises a multi-purpose office building, a research and development/design building, an owner–classification society building, an inspection and commissioning building, a reception center, and associated ancillary facilities, all constructed using a steel frame structural system. The project involves substantial steel consumption and large-section members, with a maximum plate thickness of 50 millimeters; notably, a long-span connecting corridor spans 59.9 meters and weighs approximately 150 tons, posing significant construction challenges. In addition, the constrained site conditions, concurrent operations across multiple trades, and stringent lifting-accuracy requirements further compound the complexity of the construction process.
This project is a vital component and critical link in the comprehensive relocation of Hudong–Zhonghua’s headquarters to Changxing Island. It aims to drive the transformation of the Changxing Marine Equipment Base from traditional manufacturing toward intelligent manufacturing, promote the adoption of smart production lines and green shipbuilding technologies, and establish a world-class, all-encompassing industrial base that integrates final assembly and integration, system modules, core supporting components, and production services.
The comprehensive relocation project of Hudong–Zhonghua Shipbuilding—the Phase II development of the Changxing Shipbuilding Base—commenced on January 4, 2021. Located along the southern shore of Changxing Island in Shanghai, the project entails a total investment of RMB 18 billion and has been designated as a major construction project by the National Development and Reform Commission and a key municipal project in Shanghai. It represents a significant step in the thorough implementation of national strategies such as building China into a strong maritime nation, a science and technology powerhouse, and a leader in “Made in China 2025.” The first phase covers an area of 214.6 hectares and is slated for an investment of RMB 8 billion; upon completion, Hudong–Zhonghua will establish a production capacity to build six specialized vessels annually at this site.
From the urban districts along the Huangpu River to the estuary where the Yangtze River meets the East China Sea, the comprehensive relocation of Hudong–Zhonghua Shipbuilding marks a transformative upgrade for Shanghai’s manufacturing sector. The project team will remain committed to a work philosophy characterized by high quality, stringent standards, and exacting requirements, meticulously crafting premium projects that support the transformation of the Shanghai Changxing Island Marine Equipment Base from traditional manufacturing to intelligent manufacturing, thereby driving the high-quality development of China’s shipbuilding and offshore engineering industry.
